What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the annual greenhouse gas emissions from an organisation. The main greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural businesses include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

Major sources of emissions in the Wheatbelt are generated from livestock, manufacture and application of fertiliser/pesticides along with the use of petrol and diesel.

Net zero agriculture is where greenhouse gas emissions produced are balanced by greenhouse gases taken out of the atmosphere.

Many tools have been designed to estimate emissions from WA farms. Some of these are freely downloadable desktop applications, however the results are limited by the quality of data used. There are also many local agricultural consultants that specialise in estimating carbon emissions.
